April 04, 2002, 3:45 pm i played tennis today. with a wall not a person. but it was still fun.

i don't think that i have ever looked "right" playing tennis. it occurred to me todat that i never will. i consider putting on a beasties boys sweatshirt, a black sweatshirt jacket, some shorts from an old soccer uniform and some converse the perfect tennis wear.

when i was on the tennis team in high school it took me a little while to realize that not all teenage girls feel the same way about their tennis practice wear. i learned this during team tryouts- that were at a grueling 7 in the morning during the summer break. i would show up in general shorts and t-shirts combos and play and go home. tennis was, to me, just something that i played for fun with my dad and not as real a sport as soccer was. i never really learned how to play, i just played.

i found it horrifying enough that if i made the team i would have to wear a tennis skirt. yikes. but to wear one for fun to practice at 7am blew my friggin mind. there were even some girls who put on a full face of make up before sweating in the 100+ degree heat at the butt crack of dawn. i'm sure they've aged well.

on one particular day i remember i was wearing this shirt that had a huge screenprinted skull design fully covering the shirt (note to self- figure out what happened to that shirt, it was sweet), cut off navy blue corduroy shorts, tube socks and purple/green converse, the coach said i was an "interesting addition to the sport". whatever that means. (by the way- he married a student of his and even took her to her senior prom- yuck).

just the fact that i own a few tennis skirts seems to amuse many people i know. laugh it up a-holes. you'll never again see me in one. my senior year i didn't even wear one- i just wore shorts and no one mentioned it- i think it was easier to just accept me not sexing up the sport. i would even buy the skirts a little bigger than necessary so i could wear them lower and actually cover my buttcheeks. shocking, i know. i have to say i have not missed "tennis panties" once (the panties that go over your real underwear but under your skirt that have a pocket to hold a ball in- so that every time you need a ball, you flash the world- Genious!).

i guess it was just not the fashion sport for me.

i have to say, i never had these problems with soccer. however there were some sexed up girls at that practice piling on the make up, but that was because they had the big hots for our coach. their big move was "ooh, it's hot out here (take off shirt and practice in sports bra) that's better." it never worked as far as i know- but it was fun to watch just the same.

i only played for about an hour and i can already tell i am sore- i am so out of shape.
