i am a HUGE fan of judy blume, and i just bought her book "just as long as we're together." i remember reading it in 5th grade and loving it. i re-read "blubber" a few years ago and was still in love with it.

i had a gift certificate to borders left over from christmas and so did mike, so we used the extra $$ to get this and stuart little, since they were both only 5 bucks.

first of all, the new covers are TERRIBLE. i can't even explain how terrible, you just have to see them for yourself.

secondly (and most importantly), they HAVE CHANGED TEXT. first i was confused, i mean why do such a ridiculous thing?? but then i realized that now they are aimed at a new generation of kids. for example, the main girl has a poster of richard gere on her ceiling in the original, in the new version she has the poster up, but references it by saying something like "apparently he was some famous guy to my mom, i just got the poster because it was on sale..." because kids now don't know who richard gere is! ack, i am an old broad for sure.

otherwise, it is still a great book about 7th grade girls. i am pressuring mike to get more judy blume stuff at the library. i remember loving "tales of a 4th grade nothing" and i re-read "are you there god, its me margaret" about a year ago while killing time in barnes and noble.

i think she is the best about not underestimating kids and gets their personalities right. i have been reading lots of current teen fiction and most of it is so bad i can't believe it. its really really horrifying how people have the kids talking and acting.

and judy blume talks about playboy in "are you there god.." like its normal and that girls should be proud of their bodies. i think many more books for little girls need to stress that. wayyy too many make girls hate themselves from before puberty.

i wonder how old judy blume is now... and if she lives in ny... i smell a stalking adventure in the works!
