March 11, 2002, 1:03 pm when i was about 14 i went to coney island with my dad. it was my first visit to new york and for some reason i was obsessed with going to brooklyn**. and he wanted to see coney island. so it all worked out.

it was the winter time and coney island was very gray and deserted and full of mean junk yard dogs. it was really scary. many snaggletoothed old men selling porn and pocket knives on blankets on the street. and judging by all this, and the general look that everything in coney island has, my dad assumed that it had not been operational in many years.

then we went back to my uncle's house in jersey and my dad asked about when coney island stopped being a fun land, and my uncle says "it's not closed, it's still open when it's warm." my dad and i found this hard to believe. everything looked so desolate and rickety.

whatta death trap!

now i have lived here for 5 years or so and coney island is one of my favorite places. i have ridden many a rickty ride (even the super scary cyclone), seen the freak show, and even touched the polluted water. funny how things change.

**sidenote- when i was a kid i somehow got obsessed with brooklyn. it seemed like so much cooler a place to grow up than overland park kansas. and then when i was in high school i remember saying i wanted to live in brooklyn and marry a jewish guy (i think this was spurred my love of woody allen films- but my dad just thought i was 100% strange). now i live in brooklyn with my jewish boyfriend, i guess dreams do come true....sometimes....in weird ways....was that really a dream or more of a funny thing i liked to say....i don't remember....what was my point.....
